60 Days of January: Navigating the Dry Season
December rolls in with a bang, doesn't it? Feasts,
weddings, fun, and our wallets feeling pretty heavy. The festive season is when
the “basama” (our folks who work abroad) return, turning into temporary Mr. and
Mrs. Big Money. We were all feeling like Elon Musk, telling the supermarket
attendant to "keep the change!" And might I add, this change we were
so quick to leave behind was sometimes just a humble 100 Ugandan shillings
coin.
Then, January lands like a ton of bricks. The party
is officially over.
Suddenly, that meaty wallet is dry. Remember how in
December you were eating for taste? Now you eat to survive. Hello, 2nd
grade beans, our new best friend! The idea of eating out is a funny memory.
Every last coin becomes a precious treasure.
You're suddenly a "health guru," walking
to work, telling everyone it's for fitness, when really, your car's on an
unplanned holiday because fuel is a luxury you can't touch.
This is the classic December hangover. The fun
fades, and the stress of school fees comes hammering on the door.
Trust me, I know this feeling. I started this year
totally frustrated by my bank account. Waking up every day, putting on a brave
face, faking that smile while feeling the weight of it all. It’s tough, right?
I’m a mix of hope and reality. God has a way of
reminding us that no matter how rough the start, things can change. That’s my
hopeful side thinking. The ground truth might be different right now, but hope
is free, so let’s grab it.
Things will get better. While we wait for that
moment, here are some simple ways to stretch those few resources we have:
Own your kitchen: Become the chef. Simple meals at
home save a fortune.
Pack that lunch: Ditch the expensive takeout. It’s a
small change with a big impact.
Audit your bills: Cut out those apps and
subscriptions you don't really use. That Netflix subscription can definitely
wait a month or two. Hit pause and save that cash.
Walk it out: Good for your body, great for your
mind... and let's be real, you don't really have a choice right now anyway!
Shop smart and in bulk: Plan your grocery list and
stick to it like glue. If you have children on holiday, buying staples like
rice, beans, or flour in bulk can be a lifesaver, ensuring full tummies without
daily trips to the shop.
We're all in this together. Check on your neighbors
and remember, this dry season won't last forever.
